Mumbai-Ahmedabad Bullet Train: 14 Traction Substations to Ensure Uninterrupted Power Supply
The Mumbai-Ahmedabad bullet train project is strengthening its power infrastructure with 14 traction substations across Maharashtra and Gujarat. The first substation in Bilimora is nearing completion, with equipment testing and commissioning underway.
A total of 14 traction substations (TSS) are being established along the 508-kilometre high-speed rail corridor. Of these, five will be located in Maharashtra and nine in Gujarat. These advanced substations will play a crucial role in powering the bullet train and ensuring its operations.
Traction substations are an integral component of the high-speed rail electricity supply system. They receive electricity from the grid, convert it to the required voltage level and supply it to the traction power system, enabling the bullet train to operate.
The substations are being established at Mumbai, Thane, Virar, Boisar and the Thane depot in Maharashtra. In Gujarat, the locations include Vapi, Bilimora, Surat, Bharuch, Vadodara, Anand, Mahemdavad, Ahmedabad and the Sabarmati depot.
First Traction Substation in Bilimora Nears Completion
The construction of the first traction substation in Bilimora, in Gujarat’s Navsari district, has reached its final stage.
Spread across approximately 18,000 square metres, the facility is witnessing the rapid completion of infrastructure related to electricity transmission.
The installation of equipment inside the building, including control panels, changeover switches, transformers and circuit breakers, has been completed. The installation of all gantry towers and beams has also been finished.
The facility is currently undergoing equipment testing and commissioning.
Bullet Train to Operate on 2×25 kV Technology
The traction substations in Gujarat will receive electricity from the 220 kV Ambetha grid substation operated by the Gujarat Energy Transmission Corporation Limited.
Electricity will then be supplied to the overhead equipment (OHE) installed on the viaduct through the modern 2×25 kV traction power supply system.
The traction power supply network will be continuously monitored in real time from a centralised control centre.
The network of 14 traction substations will form a critical component of the electrical infrastructure for the country’s first bullet train project, supporting the uninterrupted power supply required for high-speed rail operations along the Mumbai-Ahmedabad corridor.
